The Xperia 1 VIII measures 162 × 74 × 8.3mm and weighs 200g. Sony calls the new surface treatment ORE design, with textures and colors inspired by raw gemstones. Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red and Native Gold are listed, although availability depends on market and sales channel.

The 74mm width keeps the tall phone relatively manageable, and the dedicated two-stage shutter button remains for camera control. Victus 2 protects the front, Victus protects the rear, and the body is rated IPX5/IPX8 for water resistance and IP6X for dust resistance.

6.5-inch BRAVIA OLED display

The 6.5-inch display uses a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 1080 × 2340 Full HD+ resolution. It is a 120Hz HDR OLED with Creator mode, DCI-P3 100% coverage, BT.2020 support, 10-bit tonal gradation and BRAVIA image processing.

Sunlight Vision and front/rear light sensors adapt visibility to the environment. The straight, interruption-free panel avoids a notch or hole-punch, a deliberate choice for video and game immersion even though the resolution is below the old 4K Xperia panels.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 performance

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform drives the phone. Sony claims a 20% performance improvement over the previous generation, but that figure comes from the manufacturer and is not an independent PhoneSpecX benchmark.

The 12GB RAM allocation is paired with 256GB UFS storage in the standard UK specification. A 1TB Native Gold version was also announced in selected Sony stores. Game Enhancer, FPS Optimizer, PS Remote Play, DualSense support and 240Hz touch scanning strengthen the gaming feature set.

Storage, microSD and SIM support

Unlike many flagships, the Xperia 1 VIII supports microSDXC cards up to 2TB. That makes local 4K video, RAW image and offline media storage easier to manage without relying entirely on cloud services.

Dual-SIM configurations include nano-SIM plus eSIM or dual eSIM, depending on the model. Exact band and SIM behavior varies by region, so imported units should be checked against the intended network before purchase.

Main and ultra-wide cameras

The 24mm main camera uses a 52MP full-aspect, 48MP effective 1/1.35-inch Exmor T for mobile sensor with an f/1.9 ZEISS-calibrated lens. Sony lists a 2.24µm effective pixel pitch in 12MP binning mode and an 84-degree field of view.

The 16mm ultra-wide uses a 1/1.56-inch Exmor RS sensor, 50MP full-aspect and 48MP effective resolution, an f/2.0 lens and a 104-degree field of view. It records 12MP stills in the standard mode and benefits from the same RAW multi-frame processing approach.

New 70mm telephoto camera

The 70mm telephoto is the major hardware change. It uses a 1/1.56-inch Exmor RS sensor—about four times larger than the Xperia 1 VII telephoto sensor according to Sony—with 48MP effective resolution, an f/2.8 lens and 34-degree view.

Sony uses a fixed 70mm optical focal length rather than the previous continuous optical zoom range. The larger sensor is intended to improve detail, noise and dynamic range, while hybrid zoom extends to 17.5x from the 24mm camera. Actual quality depends on scene and processing.

AI Camera Assistant and pro controls

The AI Camera Assistant evaluates the subject and scene, then suggests Creative Look colors, lens choice and bokeh treatment. Suggestions are optional and may not appear in every shooting mode or environment.

Enthusiast controls remain: up to 30fps AF/AE burst, Eye AF for people and animals, real-time tracking, Pro Photo, Pro Video, S-Cinetone and RAW capture. Video reaches 4K HDR at 24, 30, 60 or 120fps, with Optical SteadyShot, AI Camerawork and Auto Framing.

Battery and charging

The 5,000mAh battery supports USB Power Delivery fast charging, Qi wireless charging and Battery Share for compatible accessories. Xperia Adaptive Charging, Battery Care and STAMINA Mode manage charging and power use.

Sony markets up to two days of use under a 360-minute-per-day mixed-use test with the remainder in standby. It also claims four years of healthy battery behavior under its simulations. Both figures depend on use and environment, so they should be treated as manufacturer estimates.

Audio and media features

A 3.5mm audio jack remains, alongside Hi-Resolution Audio, LDAC and Qualcomm aptX Adaptive. Newly developed matching left and right full-stage stereo speakers aim to widen the sound field, with Dolby Atmos, DSEE Ultimate and 360 Reality Audio processing also included.

The Xperia 1 VIII is a distinctive flagship built for photographers, videographers and media enthusiasts who still value expandable storage, a headphone jack and uninterrupted display. The larger telephoto sensor, three-lens RAW processing and deep camera controls are central to its identity.

Its price is steep and the display is no longer 4K, but Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, long software support, Qi charging and Sony’s audio features make the overall package more complete. Buyers who will use the pro controls and local-storage flexibility have the strongest reason to consider it.
